People’s Career : Insights and Strategies for GRE® Test Success

In Mainland China September, October and November are typically the most popular testing months. To help educators better prepare students for theGRE® revised General Test, the GRE® Program along with Chinese GRE educators and recent test takers shared their insights yesterday at Educational Testing Service’s (ETS) 2014 GRE Information Session in Shanghai A Bright Future for Your Students through GRE Success.

Jay Kang, the GRE Program official for the Asia-Pacific region, provided a comprehensive presentation on the topic of “Preparing Your Students for GRE Success.” Kang discussed insights about GRE test takers in Mainland China, specific information for advisors and educators, advice on what to tell students about the GRE revised General Test, facts versus common myths about the GRE test, and test preparation recommendations.

“In 2013, GRE revised General Test volume was greater than 70,000 in Mainland China, up nearly 10 percent from 2012,” Kang said. “Furthermore, last year nearly one out of every two GRE test takers in China took the test a second time. China is a valued and respected market, and we want to do everything we can to help China’s bright students achieve their education goals.”

In his presentation, Kang discussed the newly expanded tools for educators such as the GRE® Advisor Kit, designed to help advisors provide students with everything they need to know about test registration, preparation and sending scores. Kang also corrected several common GRE myths including:

  • Myth: GRE scores are only good for graduate programs
  • FACT: GRE scores are accepted by graduate AND business schools worldwide. More than 1,100 business schools accept GRE scores for their MBA programs, including most of the top ranked schools.

  • Myth: GRE scores are only good for study in the United States of America
  • FACT: GRE scores are accepted by thousands of institutions worldwide, including many schools in Europe and Asia. In fact, about 40 schools in China accept GRE scores. The list of schools that accept GRE scores is available at ets.org/gre/programs(PDF).

In addition, Chinese GRE educators and recent test takers shared their tips and experiences for successful GRE revised General Test preparation.

“If test takers regard English learning as a long, ongoing process, preparing for the GRE revised General Test would be easier and smoother,” Mr. Zhang Zitong, the test taker representative from Tongji University said.

Currently about 90 percent of the 2015 U.S. News & World Report Top 100 business schools in the United States and nine of the top 10 institutions on the Financial Times 2014 Global MBA Ranking accept GRE scores for admission into their MBA programs. In addition, Bloomberg Businessweek’stop 30 U.S. MBA Programs accept GRE scores for their programs.

About the TOEFL and GRE Tests

The TOEFL iBT® test, the most widely accepted academic English-language assessment, is recognized by more than 9,000 institutions in more than 130 countries. The TOEFL iBT test measures an individual’s ability to use and understand English at the university level. The assessment evaluates how well an individual combines the listening, reading, speaking and writing skills needed to perform academic tasks. For more information about the TOEFL test, including free sample test questions and study resources, visit the TOEFL Go Anywhere website at www.toeflgoanywhere.org.

GRE test scores provide graduate and business schools around the world with an objective and common measure for evaluating and comparing the qualifications of applicants with differing educational and cultural backgrounds. For more than 60 years, GRE scores have been used by admissions and fellowship panels to supplement undergraduate records, including grades and recommendations, and other qualifications for graduate-level study. The GRE revised General Test measures the skills that graduate and business schools value: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking and analytical writing — skills that are not limited to any specific field of study, but are important for all. Used by thousands of graduate and business schools around the world, the test is available at about 700 ETS-authorized test centers in more than 160 countries. People’s Career : The 10 Best Strategies and Tips for the Computer-Delivered GRE Revised General Test

1. Once you start planning, register early.
You want to get your preferred test date, time and location, so register for the GRE revised General Test as soon as you can. Plus, having a “goal” date helps you stay focused on preparation!

2. Check out the sample questions on the official GRE website.
An easy way to begin your preparation is to review the free sample questions on the GRE website. You can start to get a feel for the types of questions you’ll see in each of the three sections of the test: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Analytical Writing.

3. Take some extra time to review your math skills.
The GRE Program offers a free 100-page math review that is a great way to refresh your basic math skills and review the concepts you may see when you take the GRE revised General Test. Whether you’re a math whiz or haven’t taken a math class in a while, this practice gem, which includes problem-solving exercises, can help you get ready.

4. Download FREE POWERPREP® II software.
This free software was created by the makers of the GRE test and is as close to the actual test as you can get. The software simulates a test-taking experience. You can take a practice test and become familiar with the test directions, question types, on-screen calculator, testing software and test design.

5. Use the calculator wisely.
The on-screen calculator is a test-taker friendly feature that was added in August 2011, but you do not need to use it on every question. Use the calculator for calculations that you know are more time consuming … or even when you are finished answering all questions to check your work. Be sure to try it out in the POWERPREP II software so you know what to expect on test day.

6. Plan your test-taking strategy.
You may want to go through each timed section rapidly first, stopping only to answer questions you can answer with certainty. Then go back and answer the questions that require greater thought, concluding with the difficult questions if you have time. Be sure to use the Mark and Review features to identify questions you have skipped. Since no points are deducted for wrong answers, it’s always best to answer every question than to leave a response blank.

7. Make final preparations for test day.
Pack anything that you may need such as water and a snack to have during the break! Pack your bag the night before and set an alarm. On test day, wear comfortable clothes and dress so that you can adapt to any room temperature.

8. Remember your valid photo ID.
Check the GRE website to make sure you have valid and acceptable identification so you can be admitted to the test center on the day of your GRE test appointment. The name you used to register must exactly match the name on the ID documents that you will present at the test center.

9. Connect with other test takers.
Visit the GRE page on Facebook® and interact with other GRE test takers to exchange ideas.

10. Be sure to take advantage of FREE GRE services.
As a GRE revised General Test taker, you can opt-in to the GRE Search Service for FREE so that graduate and business school institutions can contact you about their institution, fellowships and even scholarships. Plus, you can also send four free ETS® Personal Potential Index reports to institutions, which will tell them more about your personal traits in areas like teamwork and resilience. These free services are two great ways to get noticed.

People’s Career : GRE® Popularity Among Business and Global Students Continues to Grow

The GRE® Program continued its volume growth in 2014.  While other graduate school admissions tests saw a decline in volumes for the second straight year, GRE® revised General Test volumes grew by nearly three percent compared to 2013, and recorded double-digit growth among international and business-focused audiences.

U.S. volume continued to be stable in 2014 and international volumes increased a noteworthy 11 percent, including gains of 23 percent in Africa, 11 percent in Asia and nearly 28 percent in Latin America.

Notable trends in 2014 GRE volumes compared to 2013 include:

  • GRE volume in India grew almost 20 percent, reaching volumes of more than 110,000 from that country alone.
  • Volume in Korea grew more than nine percent.
  • The number of tests taken in China remained steady, but the number of Chinese citizens taking a GRE test in the United States has increased.
  • The intended graduate major fields of study that experienced the most significant growth in 2014 include Business (18 percent), Physical Sciences (13 percent) and Engineering (11 percent).

“The GRE Program continues to be vibrant. Total annual volumes have grown by 12 percent since 2009 and in 2014 we saw strong interest from test takers in all regions of the world,” says David Payne, ETS Vice President & COO of Global Education. “With the number of institutions accepting GRE scores at an all-time high, students can use GRE scores to apply to graduate programs, MBA programs and specialized master’s in business programs around the world.”

GRE scores are accepted at thousands of institutions around the world, including more than 1,200 business schools accepting GRE scores for their MBA programs. Currently, 93 of the 2015 U.S. News & World Report Top 100 business schools in the United States and nine of the top 10 institutions on The Financial Times 2015 Global MBA Ranking accept GRE scores. In addition, 29 of Bloomberg Businessweek’s top 30 U.S. MBA programs accept GRE scores.

Over the last year, business schools have become more vocal in stating that they consider GRE scores equally with other test scores in the admissions process. According to a recent KaplanSurvey, nearly eight out of 10 MBA programs have no preference between the GRE test and other admission tests.

Payne believes many test takers are choosing to take a GRE test because of its test-taker friendly features. “We want people to feel confident and do their best. The GRE revised General Test enables people to preview questions, skip and go back to more challenging questions, and even change answers, all within a section. We know these features can help test takers get to better results.”

Payne added, “GRE test takers know they don’t need to make an immediate decision about their scores right after taking the test. If for some reason they feel they did not do their best, they can think about it and decide later if they want to retest. This means, that at any point in the five-year period during which their scores are valid, they can choose which test scores they want to report to schools. It’s about helping them succeed.”

People’s Career : Your First Instinct May Not Always Be Correct on Multiple-Choice Questions

Although you may have heard that it is best to stick with your first answer on multiple-choice test questions, new, empirical research from the GRE ®Program suggests that students who thoughtfully change their first answer are likely to improve their scores.

The ability to change an answer in the GRE ® revised General Test appears to be popular among test takers. According to the study, more than 95 percent of GRE test takers changed at least one answer in the Verbal Reasoning or Quantitative Reasoning measures.

“The GRE revised General Test is the only admissions test that allows business school and graduate school applicants to mark questions within a section and go back to change answers if they had second thoughts,” says David Payne, Educational Testing Service (ETS) Vice President & COO of Global Education. “The test-taker friendly design can help people perform better compared to how they would have done without the opportunity to change answers. Now, we have evidence that this ability to go back to complete or change an answer may help test takers improve their scores.”

The research also showed that:

  • Most GRE test takers who changed answers went from wrong to right, and boosted scores
  • All GRE test takers who skipped a question and later completed it saw the same or better scores.
  • More test takers saw score gains on the Quantitative Reasoning measure than on the Verbal Reasoning measure when changing an initial blank.
  • Changing answers helped test takers at all ability levels.

ETS surveyed nearly 2,000 test takers regarding the perceived benefits or harms of answer changing. When asked whether the original or the switched answer was more likely to be correct, 59 percent of the survey respondents believed that the original answer was more likely to be correct and only 14 percent said the changed answer.

“The results of this study disprove the fallacy that the first instinct is always correct when answering multiple-choice questions,” says Lydia Liu, Managing Senior Research Scientist at ETS. “It’s important that students, tutors and test prep companies know that the research supports response changing when there is a good reason for doing so.”

The GRE Program introduced the ability to skip questions and change answers when the GRE revised General Test was launched in 2011. This helpful feature allows individuals to use more of their own personal test-taking strategies to help them feel more confident on test day.

Payne said, “Only the GRE revised General Test gives test takers the power of confidence by letting them change answers to help them get their best scores, and knowing they can do their best helps them get that much closer to their graduate or business school goals.”
